Girls basketball looks to have successful season

With winter approaching, basketball season is getting ready to get underway.

The 2017-2018 New Palestine Dragons girls’ basketball team is looking to have a very successful season under first year head coach and New Palestine girls’ basketball all-time leading scorer, Sarah Gizzi.

Gizzi is looking forward to coaching in the same program she played in.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach this team,” Gizzi said. “This program means so much to me personally. Not only do I get to coach at the school where I had an amazing experience as a student-athlete, but I also get to have a group of incredible girls to start with.”

Gizzi believes the team’s biggest focuses will be playing under control and communicating while on the floor.

“We are focusing on playing fast, but under control offensively. We also know that if we play tough defense we can compete with any team around. Communication, good decision making and hard work are the keys to both our offensive and defensive goals,” Gizzi said.

Junior point guard Megan Jolly said she is ready to become a leader this season.

“I’m excited to play with my teammates,” Jolly said. “I missed it so much during soccer season. I want to get better with them and I hope to be a leader with my point guard position.”

Jolly also believes the Dragons will be successful if they communicate.

“I think we will have a great season if we work together, talk, and communicate,” Jolly said.

With the graduation of the team’s leading scorer last season, Raegan McMurray, many players will have to step up this season.

Gizzi said, “We are looking for leadership from our only senior Emma Grable. We also have great leadership on and off the court in several of our juniors. We expect Leah Seib and Haley Harrison to pick up their offensive production this year to help fill the void left by the graduation of Reagan McMurray. Katie Herron will be key for us on the boards and with her overall toughness. We expect big things from her in all areas and Megan Jolly handles the ball and defends so well. We have many key contributors who will come off the bench to give us energy and production as well.”

Junior guard Haley Harrison also knows that others will have to take bigger roles this season.

“All of us will have to step up because Raegan McMurray, held a big spot and we will all have to contribute what she was contributing,” Harrison said.

Harrison also said she is excited to take a bigger role on the team this season.

“I’m excited to hopefully win a conference championship and to step up and be a leader. I want to try to push everyone to be their best and reach their potential.,” Harrison said.

The Dragons are looking to bounce back after losing in the sectional semifinal last season.

“We have very high expectations for our season,” Gizzi said. “The loss of Jordan Reid was tough for us to deal with, but we have a deep team and everyone is ready to step up. We feel we can compete for conference and sectional championships. We know we have a long way to go to reach those goals, but we think we can accomplish both if we continue to work hard and improve throughout the season.”
