NPHS French students will communicate with native speakers

Students in Kate Judy’s French 3 and French 4 classes will soon begin an activity wherein they will communicate with students at a school in Angers, France. Students will hold conversations via video clips on

We are using Padlet which allows for asynchronous interpersonal writing as opposed to Google Hangouts that would be for synchronous interpersonal writing. Technologies like Padlet, email, discussion boards and blogs allow for students to respond in their time zones during class meetings,” French teacher Kate Judy said.

NPHS will be collaborating with Lycée générale et technologiques Joachim du Bellay, which is the French version of a high school. The teacher is Mme Pitavy and her students will be 15 to 16 – a little younger than the students that will participating at NPHS. Another difference is that because of how lycées structure their second-language curriculum, the students at Joachim du Bellay will have already studied English for four years.

“The purpose of this assignment is to introduce native speakers to non-native speakers through interpersonal writing. While the accuracy of how you communicate is important, the emphasis is on comprehension and negotiation of meaning,” Judy said.

NPHS students will be introducing themselves in French, the students in Angers will respond in French and vice-versa.

“Research shows that real language learning/acquisition happens when there is negotiation of meaning,” Judy said.

The activity will begin February 13 and end February 23.

“The reason for the long time is that Lycée générale et technologiques Joachim du Bellay only has computer labs. Therefore, it will take more time for the students to have access to the computers in France to complete the tasks assigned,” Judy said.

Talking with native speakers of another language is something that many students have not done, but NPHS junior and French 3 student Alec Wagoner is excited to explore his ability to communicate in a second language.

“I think it’s a different way to become more comfortable with the language in a way that we haven’t yet been exposed to,” Wagoner said.frenchcommunication
