Teachers as artists

Written by: Elyse Hurt

New Palestine High School art teacher Nikki Gardner is getting her taste at professional artistry at the creative arts and event center in Greenfield for the annual Teachers As Artists exhibition.

“I chose to put in 2 pieces. One of me and my best friend called ‘In your eyes. In Mine. In the Highest.’ and one of my boyfriend called ‘Enlightened Fratboy,’” Gardner stated.

How this event works is teachers submit two of their finest pieces of art and a jury of former art educators review the submitted art and choose which ones will be included in the show.

Following the show, a reception is held where judges give out various awards including; People’s Choice, Judges Choice, Best in Show 2D and 3D, and Honorable Mentions.

Teachers As Artists is viewable on Mondays from 11am-2pm, and Tuesday-Saturday from 11am-7pm. The exhibition is free to the public.

“Some of my students came to see the show, which made me very happy! I plan to participate in this show every year, as long as they accept my artwork. This is my second year being in the show.”
