New Palestine’s baseball team has gotten off to a hot start this season. After starting 7-0 on the season, with notable victories over Yorktown and Martinsville, the Dragons suffered their first loss on the season. The game was against Yorktown during their second game of a double-header and they lost the game by just one run, 5-4, to the Tigers. The following week the Dragons came back to deliver a 5-4 victory over Whiteland.

New Palestine’s next opponent was none-other than Cathedral High School. The Dragons battled hard, but dropped the game in extra innings 3-4. They quickly bounced back, however, with two victories in a double-header with Mt. Vernon, an 8-6 squeeze to Brebeuf and an 8-1 bashing of Connersville.

As of May 6th, the boys stood poised to hand Greenfield-Central another annual whopping, yet they did not. In a double-header with GC they lost the first game 2-0. Greenfield hit two runs in the first inning. Neither Greenfield, nor New Palestine, were able to rally any more runs. The second of the two games played out a little bit differently. The boys made a push after their scoreless first three innings. With Greenfield up 2-0, they knocked in two runs in the first to tie the game up 2-0. New Palestine continued their run into the fifth inning raking up four runs. Greenfield hit in one more run, but were unable to win or tie the game. In the second game the boys were able to nab a revenge win 6-2 over Greenfield. For the Dragons junior Colby Jenkins, senior Keegan Watson and sophomore Jack Walker all hit homers to drive the Dragons to victory.

“It hurts to lose, but you can’t do anything about it. We played our hardest and the only thing wrong we did was that we couldn’t execute when we had runners in scoring position,” said junior Kyle Gardner

So now the boys sit atop a 13-3 record with plenty of baseball left to play.

“I feel like the season is going great right now. The ones (games) we are focused on are conference games and we are ready for Brebeuf during sectionals. We beat them during the regular season and they are a good team so we have to be ready to win again.” said Gardner
